Since we last had the privilege of hearing their music live, the composers featured in SOLI’s 30x30x30 project have continued creating, collaborating, and achieving! Here’s a run-down of what five of them have been up to…
EJ Donkin
EJ Donkin has been teaching in Fort Collins, Colorado since Showcase I. We wish her the best of luck!
Elizabeth Gartman
In April, Elizabeth Gartman served as Holy Trinity Lutheran Church’s composer in residence, where her work The first dew on the first flower was premiered. Her opera Constance: A Confession was just premiered by Experiments in Opera premieres at HERE Arts Center in New York, and her opera Forever garnered an honorable mention at last year’s ASCAP Morton Gould Young Composer Awards. Forever can be seen in performance July 17th-25th as a part of One Ounce Opera’s 8th annual Fresh Squeezed Ounce of Opera Festival. Eric Estrada Valadez
Eric Estrada Valadez’s Spare Parts Spin was awarded an Honorable Mention at last year’s Boston New Music Initiative Composer Competition and won the 47th Festival of New American Music (FeNAM) Call for Scores. Boston New Music Initiative recently gave the world premiere of his work Traces as the prize for winning their New England Legacies: The Boston Six Reimagined Commissioning Prize, and his piece Divided Realities won the ARTZenter Institute’s Emergent Composer Grant. The San Francisco Contemporary Music Players will premier Divided Realities on June 9th at the Herbst Theatre in San Francisco, California. More information can be found on their website.
Hee Yun Kim
Hee Yun Kim spent 3 weeks in March as the composer-in-residence at the Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts, where she wrote Frozen Veils: Echoes of Poets. She just finished another residency at the Hambidge Center in Northern Georgia. Kim’s work Calling of the Whales was performed at the Kennedy Center Millenium Stage in January, and with the production she also founded Threaded Resonance, a creative platform which “reimagines the musical experience through original productions and interdisciplinary collaborations.” More about the company can be found at their website!
