“Life can drone along at a hum for years—then break into a short but glorious chorus that changes us forever.” --Rebecca Webber, “Big Moments”, Psychology Today, September 2010
Rarely in life are we swept off our feet, but when it happens, the memory of that feeling never leaves you. You can close your eyes and return to it -- like breathing in a memory. A couple of these precious moments for me are musical: performing a moving Mahler’s Second Symphony, and playing an inspiring quartet by Aaron Jay Kernis with SOLI. These experiences are what my mind went to when I read the article “Big Moments.” This article in Psychology Today explores what are called ‘Peak Experiences’. The second I read it I knew this was the title of our new SOLI season. SOLI is about that feeling of new awareness, of intense power…through music…of sharing and communicating that emotion to others. That is the gift of music for me, for us as an ensemble. Music is strength and connection – and empowerment. Each of our season program titles are the stages in a Peak Experience: Quantum Change, R/Evolutions, Flow, and at last, Freedom.
As you look through this season, you’ll see several new commissions (the ‘TBA’ titles are still being created!). We have commissioned these works from inspiring composers--written for us, to perform for you. These will be moments of wonder and awe, of seamless engagement that will transport all of us beyond ourselves. We look forward to sharing this journey with you.
